Director of Music Position
August 2025
Overview:
The Episcopal Church of the Messiah is a joyful, Christ-centered, orthodox Christian community located in the Spotsylvania County section of Fredericksburg, VA. Our vision is to proclaim God’s two words, the Law and the Gospel, to the end that people recognize who they are before God as sinners and sufferers and yet, more so, to hear the Good News of God’s love and forgiveness given to us in Jesus Christ. To that end, we value worship that is rooted in the ancient liturgical rhythms of our Episcopal/Anglican heritage while being open to the work that the Holy Spirit is doing in our lives and community.
We are seeking a quarter-time (10-12 hours a week) Director of Music who will lead and coordinate worship music at Church of the Messiah. As a church that appreciates various styles of worship music, an ideal candidate will be able to coordinate music in both traditional and contemporary styles. While experience in an Episcopal/Anglican worship setting is preferred, candidates do not need to be Episcopalian to apply. This position reports to the Rector, who has final oversight over all music.
Responsibilities:
Play piano/organ and lead the singing of traditional hymnody at 8am service
Lead and direct the choir and a band consisting of piano, guitars, and drums at 11am service
Lead weekly choir and band rehearsals
Provide musical accompaniment for choral arrangements and service music
Coordinate contemporary music selections (currently music during the Offertory, Communion, and Recessional at the 11am service)
Assist clergy in planning Sunday worship and special services (Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, etc.)
Encourage use of congregation’s musical abilities in worship
Organize and maintain parish’s music library
Oversee care of pianos, organ, and any other instruments
Develop an annual budget (to be approved by the Vestry)
Provide music for weddings and funerals (for additional compensation)
Requirements:
Must be able to express saving faith in Jesus Christ and alignment with Church of the Messiah’s beliefs and commitments
Desire to worship God in an Episcopal/Anglican setting
Ability to lead and play music and sing at the same time with excellence
Experience in leading a choir and working with other musicians
Proficiency in piano and/or organ
Appreciation of traditional and contemporary styles of worship music
Reliable, organized, detail-oriented, and responsive to feedback
Knowledge of Episcopal/Anglican hymnody and liturgy preferred
